Assistant Engineer

Job Description
The Assistant Engineer selected for this opportunity will gain key public sector experience with engineering tasks related to water and wastewater infrastructure that can effectively position you to pursue and obtain key, sought-after public sector jobs. We are looking for an Assistant Engineer that has 2+ years of experience in plan review and project administration to work on-site and full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) in the Highland area.
Projects may include:
- New Meter Installation
- New Water Service Connections
- Water Mainline Installations
- Sewer Line Installations
As an Assistant Engineer, your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Support engineering staff with studies, designs, and construction planning for District facilities; prepare construction plans, specifications, design calculations, and cost estimates.
- Administer construction contracts, including coordinating with contractors, processing payments, tracking progress, negotiating change orders, and resolving claims.
- Review and prepare maps, deeds, and legal descriptions; ensure mapping records are accurate and up to date; research and resolve discrepancies.
- Collaborate with consultants, developers, contractors, and public agencies to coordinate project activities and ensure compliance with District standards.
- Provide customer service by responding to public inquiries and sharing accurate project or facility information.
- Stay current on engineering best practices through meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
- Prepare technical reports, correspondence, and project documentation, maintaining organized and accurate records and files.
Job Requirements
As an Assistant Engineer, you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or related field
- At minimum, 2 years of professional engineering design, plan review, and project administration experience, preferably in a public agency setting
- Preferred: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification
- Knowledge of basic principles, practices, procedures and standards related to utilities and related infrastructure development and maintenance
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship in the U.S.)
- Valid CA Driver’s License and proof of insurance
