Job Description

The Associate Engineer selected for this opportunity will gain key public sector experience in public works project management and construction that can effectively position you to pursue and obtain key, sought-after public sector jobs. We are looking for a Civil Engineer that has 8+ years of experience in public works engineering to work on-site and full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) in the Montclair area. 

Projects may include:

  • Street Alley Upgrades
  • Walkway and Bike Lane Upgrades
  • Pedestrian Way Upgrades (sidewalks, ramps, signals, crosswalks)

As an Associate Engineer, your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Support management of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
  • Administer consultant and construction contracts for public works projects
  • Prepare cost estimates and monitor project schedules and budgets
  • Solicit, track, and manage proposals and contracts from consultants and contractors
  • Coordinate inspectors, consultants, contractors, and testing/survey teams to ensure timely project delivery
  • Review and recommend approval of progress payments and change orders; maintain project documentation and records
  • Assist with grant applications and funding support
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the City Engineer/Public Works Director
  • Respond to public inquiries related to Public Works projects
  • Coordinate Engineering Division activities with other departments and outside agencies

Job Requirements

As an Associate Engineer, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or closely related field
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including experience as a project manager
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification
  • Preferred: Licensed California Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Experience with public works engineering, design, construction, record keeping, and project management
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship in the U.S.)
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and proof of insurance
